Phones in the Classroom

Anyone have trouble with the login time for student computers?  I am seriously thinking about having the kids use their cell phone for access to the internet for simple tasks such as finding vocab definitions, class polling, reading QR codes etc to cut down on the wasted login time.
I know that every student probably uses his/her phone to text sometime throughout the day.  I think that having the phones out and using them productively might discourage them from using them for banned phone usage such as texting/facebooking, etc.

  1. The school has a zero telerance when it comes to cell phones in the classroom. You are going to have to get admin approval for this type of a use.

  2. I think it is a great idea, but Mrs. Roberts raises a great point. I do think schools should allow cell phones to be used properly in the classroom. If used correctly cell phones can be great tools in the education process.

  3. I think it is only a matter of time before cell phones are a part of classroom technology. I can definitely see some benefits to it as long as there is a way to keep them under control.

  4. Kyle,

I think a lot of this boils down to teaching style. Are kids going to text, of course they are! They used to pass notes and make fun of us and each other under their breath. If we want to sit behind our desk and distribute packets, hoping the students will make the learning magic happen, we'll be as ill-equipped to manage cell phones as we are pencil and paper.

I found this resource recently. I haven't spent much time at this site, but it may be worth checking out. http://www.cellphonesinlearning.com/

  5. As a teacher ... I think we should encourage the use of a cell phone as a learning tool. We need to teach students about when using technology is appropriate and when it is not.
As a parent ... my concern is whether anyone would feel left out of an activity b/c their phone isn't able to do those things or if they don't have a cell phone. I don't think my son's phone would work.
